A's win in Seattle opener

The Athletics opened the series with the Seattle Mariners by winning 2 to 0. The A's benefited from good pitching by rookies Greg Smith and Brad Ziegler. Veteran slugger Frank Thomas was ejected in the sixth inning after complaining about striking out to the umpire. Bob Geren, "It's the old arguing balls and strikes -- you're not supposed to do that I guess. But he's [Thomas] been around a long time ... he knows."
Mark Ellis was 0 for 3 with a walk.
